An Eden Prairie man pleaded guilty Monday after a hit-and-run seriously injured a 2-year-old girl.John Brecount, 65, pleaded guilty to a felony criminal vehicular operation charge for causing a crash that resulted in great bodily harm and then leaving the scene. He also pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor for bodily harm and leaving the scene.RELATED: Eden Prairie hit-and run charges: Driver was checking phone when he struck 2-year-old girlIn August of 2025, Brecount hit a mother and her two children who were being pulled in a wagon.According to a criminal complaint, the mother, Spogmai Kamawal, and her four children were crossing at Mitchell Road and Chestnut Drive. Two of her children were in the wagon when a car plowed through the crossing.Two-year-old Somaia Kamawal was hit and spent six weeks in the hospital recovering from her injuries. Kamawal suffered a traumatic brain injury, broken bones, and lacerations to her spleen and kidney.Brecount, a volunteer chaplain with the Eden Prairie Fire Department, said he had briefly checked his phone at the time of the crash. Court records show Brecount told authorities that he heard a bump while driving but never stopped.Brecount’s next court hearing is set for Dec. 7.
